Obama and the Lobbyists

February 22, 2008

By Douglas B. Wakeman

Obama has policies!  He has fleshed out his blather about change with a "Blueprint for Change" on his website.  He must have channeled Karl Marx for it, but it's out there.  It has nothing to do with American values, our system of government or its constitutional limitations. It is boilerplate, doctrinaire Socialism.  But, he has policies!

He starts out vilifying America business; you know, those entities that are the engine of our prosperity.  Those people who employ your skills for that paycheck?  They are the enemy.  Who will he have monitoring and punishing these evil oppressors?  The government; you know, those people who take your paycheck.

For the sin of lobbying the government, a constitutionally guaranteed right, he's going after them.  In a system so out of control that a politician's whim can destroy a business, and often does, Mr. Socialist is telling them to just shut up.  Politicians cannot be bothered.  Here is his proposal for a database of lobbyists:

Shine Light on Washington Lobbying
Centralize Ethics and Lobbying Information for Voters: Obama will create a centralized Internet database of lobbying reports, ethics records, and campaign finance filings in a searchable, sortable and downloadable format.

Shine the Light on Federal Contracts, Tax Breaks and Earmarks
Create a Public “Contracts and Influence” Database: As president, Obama will create a “contracts
and influence” database that will disclose how much federal contractors spend on lobbying, and what
contracts they are getting and how well they complete them.

Expose Special Interest Tax Breaks to Public Scrutiny:
Barack Obama will ensure that any tax breaks
for corporate recipients – or tax earmarks – are also publicly available on the Internet in an easily searchable
format.

Of course there are many people lobbying politicians other than business.  But Marxists don't see them as lobbyists.  These are their pals.  These are their supporters.  These are the ones that kick back a portion of their taxpayer goodies into the Marxists' campaigns.  These are the ones who do not lobby to be left alone to conduct business, employ people and engage in useful pursuits.  No, these are the ones who have no other pursuits.  Their only pursuit is to get government goodies from the taxpayer.  That is their job; lobbying for money.  I wonder if Obama will have them in his database.

Here is the letter I wrote to him.  I really would like to see this database.  What are the chances?

Dear Senator Obama,

I like your idea of a searchable database of corporate recipients of public largesse and the politicians whom they own. In fact, I think we should be able to search on the internet and find every recipient of our tax dollars, how much they are getting and who they paid to get it.

Every person who receives a food stamp, a welfare check, a Medicare, Medicaid or social security payment, rent subsidy, tuition help, mortgage bailout, SCHIP benefits, SSI payments, job training, and grants of any type should be searchable. And let’s see which politicians they donated to.

In fact, if we are exposing special interests tax breaks, how about listing the person and the amount of every single tax deduction taken by any person on their IRS filing. I certainly consider myself a special interest; the most special interest! I'm sure every other taxpayer, wooed by congress with tax breaks, considers himself the same. Surely the voter, with ballot in hand, is the first lobbyist without whom corrupt politicians would not even be in a position to hand out favors. Let's see who is getting those earned income credits and how much. Is your neighbor or ex-spouse claiming a non-existent or non-custodial child? Just look him up in the Obama Lobbyist database!

And, how about providing the ability to easily find every recipient of a farm subsidy and which politicians they paid for it?

How much is given to NGOs like Planned Parenthood, the AFL-CIO and the teachers unions? These are 'special interests' with armies of Washington lobbyists, are they not? How much does each and every school get from the Department of Education? Are there any federal education programs paid for with federal dollars? Let's see the name and amount of every family with children enrolled. If I am funding tuition breaks for individuals, I want to know who and how much. What politicians do they lobby with their donations and their votes? What politicians do the teachers unions own, heart and soul?

Almost every act of congress is engineered to benefit one of the most powerful and corrupt lobbying groups in the nation; the American Trial Lawyers Association. Will your database detail the name, amount and recipient of every contribution by this grotesque gaggle of slip-and-fall ambulance chasers? Conversely will it detail every cent given to the ACLU and other "non-profits" by the American taxpayer? What a great service that would be!

How about the racial grievance lobbyists? Don't the NAACP, MALDEF, PRDEF, La Raza, the Million Man March and a multitude of others lobby the government for favors, financial and otherwise? How wonderful it will be to finally find, quickly and easily, how much tax money is being funneled to these divisive entities and who in congress they have bought.

I believe that foreign nations also lobby for my tax dollars. Could your database also show every cent that has gone for foreign aid, AIDS programs and family planning programs overseas? Most of these taxpayer dollars go right into the pockets of third-world dictators. Let’s see what politicos have received money from these types. You will have to look at donations to presidential libraries, board memberships, IPO opportunities, high paid speeches and other tricky ways of getting money to our legislators, former and present to find most of these lobbying tactics. But, let’s dig deep and get it all out there.

The proposed budget for 2008 is 3 trillion dollars, most of which is tax money given away to people or groups who lobby for it in various ways. Your database would be massive. And, it would be a beautiful research tool for anyone who wishes to be a soldier in the war on waste, for economic think tanks, for reporters or for social activists. Magnificent programs could be written by creative people in the private sector to gather useful statistics and ferret out fraud, waste and abuse.

Anyone who gets a dime or in-kind benefit directed to them from the federal leviathan that is not channeled through general purposes should be prepared to be out there for examination by the governed.

It is about time that someone presented an idea for monitoring of government giveaways by the people who pay for it all!

Thank you!
